Malta lies in the heart of a beautiful and historic region along the scenic Muskingum River in Southeastern Ohio. The Muskingum River is the largest river lying solely within Ohio flowing 112 miles from Coshocton to the Ohio River at Marietta. Missionaries settled along the headwaters of the Muskingum in 1761. Soon after the settlement of Marietta in 1788, one of the city's founders, General Rufus Putnam, recognized the economic potential of the Muskingum River for transporting raw materials to eastern markets.
West Point graduate Major Samuel Curtis designed a system of 10 dams and 11 locks to connect the Muskingum River to the Ohio and Erie Canal at Dresden. Opened in 1841, the system provided navigable waterways from Marietta to Lake Erie. These locks are still operated by hand today more than 150 years after their construction. Boaters and other historical enthusiasts can take a step back in time by traveling up the Muskingum River.
The Malta area as a whole represents a great place to come for those who possess a certain affinity for either history or the great outdoors. The Village of Malta is very near to a number of historical landmarks, state parks, wildlife areas and other outdoor recreation opportunities. If you have never come to Malta, this is an area you will want to explore and discover! |
